Bullet-point Life Update Dec. 17th, 2009 @ 10:06 pm

  • Will spend most of January-February in the Bay Area (Livermore).

  • I can has citations.

  • Gave colloquium at Amherst earlier this fall; it went pretty well.

  • Gave preliminary PhD oral exam earlier this fall; it sucked but I managed to pass.

  • More-or-less on track for a May 2011 PhD. Started writing thesis: I have an outline.

  • May be in some danger of indefinite unemployment thereafter.

  • Working on (too) many projects, none of which is progressing nearly as rapidly as necessary.

  • I now have 3,100,000 6n-equivalent node hours to use up at Fermilab. About halfway through the allocation period, I've use a whopping 2,818 (0.1%). (There are other folks who could help use these up, but so far I seem to be the only one with work planned.)

  • So it would be really nice if the program I've been debugging for the last several weeks actually started working. I found one bug on 23 November and another on 2 December, but something still isn't working.

Quote of the day, from The Guardian:

I don't believe in protesting, because that looks like you've lost the battle and don't like it. I believe in making demands. This is more important than you realise at the moment, but when people get together and do something, that's when history is changed.

Procrastination is a harsh mistress Jan. 13th, 2009 @ 01:25 am
On one level, I find it amusing that I'm eager to work on pretty much every project I have except for the one that really, really, really needs to get done. On other levels, yeah, not so much.

On that note, you get one guess as to why I'm posting this. I also rearranged my bookshelf earlier this evening.

Well, I have until Wednesday afternoon before I enter a world of pain.

Shit.
